unmountable boot volume

My computer locked up while I was burning a DVD. When I powered down and
tried to reboot, I get the following stop error: 0x0ED
(0x86FDE520,0xC000009C,0x0,0x0).

I'm using XP Home edition and tried to use an XP pro install disk to boot
and repair from using chkdsk /r. When I did chkdsk /r, I was told there are
one or more unrecoverable errors. Would it matter if I used the wrong XP
disk or is this error likely something that is unrecoverable? If it is, do I
have to reformat everything or is there a way around this? Thanks.

For chkdsk, no, the CD version won't matter. What *will* matter is if
needed system components were in the unrecoverable areas.

So, you may just need to do a repair install of Home. If you lack the XP
Home CD, you may be able to get to that by bootng with the Pro CD, locating
the \i386 directory on the hard disk (assuming there is one - there isn't
always) and running winnt.exe.

Alternately, find another Home CD and use the license key on the side of the
computer.

Thanks for the response. There is a 386 or i386 directory on the hard drive,
but I can't access it due to the problem. I'm only able to access whatever
the install disk has on it. I don't recall seeing winnt anywhere when I was
able to get to the dos prompt with the disk, but I can check again.

If that doesn't work, would I be able to install pro over home in order to
keep things intact?

Well, the pro install disk has an i386 directory, but when I tried to use
winnt.exe it says the command is not recognized. Type help for a list of
supported commands. Looks like I may just have to format the drive.
