Very Desperate.

I'm running Xp Home on a Toshiba laptop, and have the
above problem. I do not have an XP Home CD, just a drive
image provided by the manufacturer.

I have important files that I need to retrieve off the
drive, so I do not want to use the drive image.

Can anyone help me with getting this back up and running.

I'm really not sure that you can do anything useful without a real XP
CD. Although Toshiba's recovery disk may allow you to do a repair
install, it may not. Be smart - if the data is really important, just
take the machine to a good local computer repair shop (not a CompUSA or
Best Buy store) and have them get your data off. They'll slave the hard
drive to one of their machines. Then either have them check out the
machine or you can reinstall Windows with the Toshiba disk.
