unloadable text fonts

Windows XP will not allow me to load certain type of
SerifGothic (TrueType) fonts. Windows XP gives me the
following error message (Unable to install font. The font
file may be damaged. check with your font vendor about
obtaining a new file). The font files are not damaged,
they work fine in Windows 2000.

Is SerifGothic the complete name?

Where'd you get that font file? Is it from an actual font vendor, did
it install with some program, or did you download it from the web? If
it is from the web then I would suspect that WinXP is correct, there
is something wrong with it. The fact that it runs under Win2000
doesn't mean much. There are a lot of really crappy TT fonts out
there.

Win95 seems to handle fonts differently that past versions. As an
example, have you run the character map program (charmap.exe) and
taken a look at the Times New Roman font? Scroll all the way down and
take a look. I've not bothered to look into what that's all about yet;
I think it has something to do with the opentype format versus true
type. At some point I'll fire up google and look into it.
