Unknown password for XP log in

Any help appreciated!
A password prompt has somehow been added to the log-in window of my xp home
OS. When I as for a password hint, it gives me what I have sometimes used
as an answer to my security question "what is my mother's maiden name" I
have just recently purchased this computer and had not set-up a password,
nor had been promted for one on the first many log-in attempts over the last
couple weeks. How do I reset or eliminate this password?

Bob,

Try to boot in "Safe Mode". You do this by tapping the F8 key about
once per second during startup. You should be presented with a DOS
window that gives you the choice of starting the system in "Safe Mode"
or "Safe Mode with Networking support"

When the system starts you should see the option to log in as
"Administrator". Login as Administrator, and then from the toolbar
click "Start", click "Control Panel", Double-click "User Accounts",
then double-click your user account and select "Remove Password", from
the menu choices.

Then Shut down and reboot the system. You should be able to log back
in.

Happy Networking!
