Hallo,

some days ago I noticed that Christian Ghisler updated his freeware
standalone Lister version to support the same functionality as the
internal Lister of <OT>TC</OT> does. These changes have been done
between February and June last year. So I'm a bit surprised we didn't
seem to have noticed that the freeware lister now supports Plugins!! -
Even during the PW process, if I didn't miss a post on that topic...
:)

As a result, Lister (in combination with IrfanView/XnView and Plugins)
is the best free multi-format viewer solution available, at the moment.
IMHO, of course.

Program and Plugins can be found here:

www.ghisler.com/lister
www.ghisler.com/plugins.htm (scroll down to Lister Plugins)
www.totalcmd.net/directory/lister.html

Lister has been 'Priceless' before. With all the free Plugins available,
it is bound to keep this status! ;-)

Yes, Lister is available separately and does support plugins. It is an
excellent program, and I use it with freeCommander
http://www.freecommander.com/index_en.htm

However, its support of plugins is sporatic. I have never been able to get
the excellent plugin xBaseView to work with Lister, although I can use the
included programs to view databases. Also, I had to try several pdf readers
before I found one that worked. The plugins that allow reading of MS Office
documents and OpenOffice documents work well. However, the best feature is
that Lister supports display by Irfanview.

Doesn't matter much, IMHO. The currently available plugins cover most
every-day needs and quite a few interesting niches. A very useful one
is FileInfo by François Gannier. And even commercially provided plugins
like CAD-View are often provided free for personal use.
I have never been able to get the excellent plugin xBaseView to work
with Lister,

I've used several versions of xBaseView by now. It sometimes crashes
when confronted with files having improper extensions. (Or actually
correct extensions, which nevertheless belong to a kind of data that
is different from what xBaseView thinks.)

Most additional problems with xBaseView come from missing or older
versions of needed database engines (like Borland BDE or MS ADO).
although I can use the included programs to view databases.

Are you talking about opening Access databases with MS Access, for
instance? That's not necessarily a good indicator. The xBaseView
plugin is much more version dependent to the installed database
engines than the fat programs. (The latter usually support more
than one version and sometimes even different access methods.)
Besides, a needed library may reside inside the program directory
of the program you say running fine. If this directory is not
part of the search path, xBaseView can not find the library...
Also, I had to try several pdf readers before I found one that worked.

You also can install more than one plugin for each file type.
Repetitive presses of the button "4" (= Options->Multimedia)
cycle through all registered programs for the extension in
question.

You only can use lister plugins with Lister. The plugin you
mentioned is a content plugin for the display of file
properties within <OT>TC panes</OT>.

Oops. It's been so many years since I paid for TC that I sometimes
forget that it's not freeware.
