Hello all. thought i would share my current list of
essential freeware for when i do a reinstall or recommend

presentations.
www.openoffice.org

functions including messages to more advanced needs like
shutdown computer.
http://www2.odn.ne.jp/hamataro/

Total Uninstall – tremendously useful programme that
monitors another programmes installation to help with future
removal. Especially useful if you frequent here
(alt.comp.freeware) and read about a piece of software that
may have a function or purpose you may need or want but
fails to live up to expectations.

Power Archiver – (last freeware ed) opens most compressed
files (zip, rar, ace, jar) with a convenient right click to

inspecting my newsreader folder and download folder after
going on the internet.
http://www.epix.net/~artnpeg

Ranish partition manager – create, copy, delete verify and
boot mutiple partitions. Has a steep learning curve, but
does come with a simulator programme to try.
http://www.ranish.com/part/

Bochs – is a pc emulator. Can run many boutique, Linux, DOS
and Windows Operating Systems. No Mac or BeOS. Since it's a
PC emulator all processes are emulated by the programme so

sensitive files also erases empty space on hard disks. Uses
multiple write system to ensure erasure. Also has a dos exe
for erasing hard disk.

some other features to the right click menu.
http://www.rjhsoftware.com/index.html

Tray it – move a programme from the task bar to the tray.

Digital audio programmes

wave repair – the free features will always be available.
it's my preferred wave recorder. Has a timer and time limit
function as well. And i use the cue points ->split tracks
for gapless live audio CD's.

Audacity – free wave editor and multitrack ability.

winamp – v2.91 for mp3 playback with the gapless audio
output plugin for seamless live audio mp3's

1by1 – with winamp v2.xx IN_plugins plays all audio file

the plugins for use with the encode option.
http://neroplugins.cd-rw.org/

ac3 filter - for AC3 / Dolby Digital playback

CDEX – convert your CD collection to MP3's or OGG for use
with winamp. If you have dial up you can use the batch query
option to get information for all the CD's you have made
CDEX aware of before ripping to hard drive.

Digtal video programmes generally found at www.doom9.org and
www.dvdrhelp.com

Power Archiver – (last freeware ed) opens most compressed

Mixed results. Running WinME, I never needed a standalone archiver, until I
needed something that could handle ACE files. PA took over all my file
associations and the basic ZIP functionality that was built into ME is
gone. The right click works OK, but introduces another step in the process.

PA won't allow you to not associate it with ZIP.

missed out internet.

Internet programmes

Firefox and or
Mozilla 1.6 – I just use it for the browser and composer.
No popups, tabbed browsing

StarDownloader. (Last freeware version) handy for large
downloads with the resume, queue and multipart download
feature.

Wackget – handy for smal downloads where all you need is
resume and queueing.
http://www.millweed.com/projects/wackget/

zonealarm or
sygate firewall -use zonealarm if you don't care to much
about what is connected to the internet atnd when. But
sygate shows you the current Internet speed and which
programmes are online and how many bits is being used.

Intellitamper – great for those links on a website that use
some absurd (read broken) javascript link.
http://www.intellitamper.com/

HTTrack – for downloading a web site for offline reading

Agreed!

Maybe you can enlighten me. I tried Total Uninstall, and finally gave
up after waiting, like 2 hours, for it to create a drive image so I
could install what I wanted. I prefer InstallRite
http://www.epsilonsquared.com/ which seems to be faster on the image
creation part, and I can clone the install for other computers. Yet you
and others recommend T.U. very highly. Am I doing something wrong with TU?

Total Uninstall's user interface leaves a little to be desired IMO.
What you look for after it catalogs your system (it doesn't create a
drive image as you say) is for the "Next" button to become enabled
again. At that point you press that button and the program moves on to
the next stage (program installation).

This morning I tried to use TU to remove Quicktime Player, which I'd
installed via TU and it crashed my computer. Luckily, a reboot allowed
me to use the "Uninstall Quicktime" shortcut that Quicktime
installation had created, and the uninstall proceeded okay. Left a
couple of folders behind that I had to delete, but no biggie. Actually
it was kind of a clean uninstall for such a program. However, TU
failed to come through for me in this instance.

None of this crap would be necessary if MS would have made it possible
to easily, cleanly and completely remove installed programs LIKE THEY
SHOULD HAVE. IMO there is no excuse for orphan program files and
registry entries, it's just bad programming.

Actually, I was wrong. After TU catalogs your system, you need to
browse to the installation file of the program you're installing and
select it. Once that's done, then the "Next" button becomes enabled.

MYMDB by Janssoft - Makes MSAccess databases without the cost.
FTP Wanderer by Pablo Van Der Meer
Cetus Notepad and Cetus Wordpad

(window on top, window_not_on_top, arrange windows)
The standards, Acrobat reader, QuickTime Alternative, RealAlternative
VirtualDub
AudioGrabber
Trillian
HJsplit at Freebyte.com
Sortpics
HTMLkit.
PhotoFiltre
TclockEx

Browser links to Mail.yahoo.com and my.calendars.net (neat!),

My List:

OpenOffice.org
Mozilla Firebird and Thunderbird - Takes care of spam too, so no spam
prog. I find the two separate ones load faster than the Mozilla
integrated does.
Microsplanet Gravity - for newsgroups
Avast Antivirus - PC Utils Magazine rated it up there with McAffee
Spybot Search and Destroy - barely better than Adaware
ToniArts EasyCleaner -
PowerArchiver - but I'm not thrilled with it.
PurgeIE - Really clean IE history and temps.
IRfanview - I also grab every plugin I can find.
Haysoft FTP Explorer - now ad ware but still...
QuickandEasy FTP server by Pablo Van Der Meer
MYMDB by Janssoft - Makes MSAccess databases without the cost.
FTP Wanderer by Pablo Van Der Meer
Cetus Notepad and Cetus Wordpad
ArsClip - Clipboard extender - one file wonder!
SendtoBack - Window manager, but I would mind finding something better
(window on top, window_not_on_top, arrange windows)

VirtualDub
AudioGrabber
Trillian
HJsplit at Freebyte.com
