Universal Document File Format?

W

Walter R.

Now Microsoft has done it again: Windows 2007 uses the .docx file format
instead of the .doc format. It does not work well with my Word 2002 .doc
format.

Why can't all these word processors get their act together and use ONE file
format? I was tempted to switch to the Linux Open Office program but they
seem to save their files in .xml format. Worldwide, this approach results in
poor communications.

Is there any file format that can be read by any and all word processors?
..txt files look rather primitive. What else is there? Which one is the most
widely accepted file format?

Thanks for any input.
