uninstalling windows xp

to whom it may concern,
I don't know where else to ask, but I need to
uninstall windows xp from my system but i can't seem to
do it. i went to add\remove programs, and uninstall
windows xp is not in the program list to change or move.
the system will not allow me to format the c:\> drive. i
really need to do this for school but i just can't figure
it out. will someone help me? please!
