uninstalling software

Hi,
Purchased a slightly used laptop w Office xp already added; however, Word
has a slight glitch. In trying to uninstall the old version registered to
previous owner and install my own, I run into an inability to uninstall. The
Add/Remove program doesn't seem to see the older version, only mine. Tried
the registry removal microsoft -ware; didnt help. Tried installing my version
into the old Office 10 folder; it installed and a new folder was created
within the original office 10 folder containing the old version. When I open
Word from either folder (presumably mine or that of the previous owner), the
version of Word that opens is registered to the previous owner.
I would appreciate any advice y'all might have.
Thanks.

Or you can change the owner name to yours:
Open the run command by clicking Start >> Run and type in:
regedit.exe click [OK] or Hit Enter on your Keyboard.
On the Registry Editor locate the Key Mentioned like this:
[-] HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\Current
Version\RegisteredOwner = and change the Name to what you have in Mind
[-]HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows
NT\CurrentVersion\RegisteredOrganization = change to whichever name you want
like "workgroup"

Then after finish close the Registry and Reboot the machine.
HTH.

First, double-check that Add/Remove Programs doesn't have any trace of Office
or Word XP ... it may not be listed under the name you expect, so check all
the entries in Add/Remove Programs.

If you can't find it there, follow the directions here:

http://kb.iu.edu/data/ajkk.html

Assuming you have Office XP (or newer), you should be able to use the
utility for Office 10 (XP) removal from your CD. I would uninstall your
version first, try to use the uninstall utility, and then re-install your
version (rebooting your computer between uninstalls / installs).

Best Wishes,
Kurosh

Thanks, Nass, but there was no registered owner file under current
version/windowsNT. I searched every file under windows in regedit and
couldn't find any mention of registered owner. I note there are some files
for Office 8, 9, 10, and 11 there. Perhaps one of them holds the answer.
Meanwhile I will try Kurosh's suggested fix.

Well, this didn't work either. No hint of the program in Add/Remove. Also the
Office xp CD doesn't have an uninstall feature. I did manage to get rid of
the other Office 10 folder and software (just deleted it, which it wouldn't
let me do before); now after installing, only one Office XP shows up. I also
deleted the Office 10 files in the registry editor. However, after
reinstalling my Office xp and starting up Word, it STILL comes up as
registered to Marek, the previous owner and still has the same opening
glitches ("Main ADDIN could not be found" and " Compile Error in hidden
module: main module).
I remain open and expectant of some other ideas. Please.
And thanks for the effort to help so far.

So, just to be clear, you were unable to find "Offcln.exe" in this folder:

D:\Files\Pfiles\Msoffice\Office10

on Disk 1 of your Office XP CD set?

(I'm assuming your CD-ROM drive is D:, but substitute the appropriate letter
if it isn't)

If you can't find this file, you should check with Microsoft, as I'm sure
this would probably help you resolve your troubles.

Also, it seems that you have pre-Office XP registry entries (i.e. Office 8
and 9) on your laptop. You might want to try this as well:

http://office.microsoft.com/en-ca/help/HA011401771033.aspx

Again, I would remove your Office XP installation before attempting to use
these tools, since your installation may be affected as well -- once your
computer has been cleaned of any traces of previous versions, you can
re-install your version.

Kurosh

Hi,
Well, try to clean up the Ex-office installations before installing your XP
Office, by deleting all folders for the old version.
Here is an utility to help:
http://www.ccleaner.com
Be careful when using this tool to remove the files/folder and even the
registry keys.
Then before installing your XP Office try to change the name of the previous
owner with yours by downloading this tool:
Line 7 - 2nd column = Change/Remove Registered owner and organization:
http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_tweaks.htm
HTH.

Well, I tried all suggestions of both Nass and Kurosh – no go. I ran three
different cleaners – one I did find on the Office CD, one downloaded for
Microsoft, the C cleaner too. The C Cleaner did not note any additional
Office programs, per se, prior to cleaning; it did find some peripherals
files, but their removal made no difference. In the registry – after deleting
Office 8, 9, 10 and 11; on restart 10 and 11 return!
At one point, after impulsively deleting everything I could find and
revoking all the permissions (not sure what they are) on the Office registry
files, my computer would not accept a re-installation of my Office; so I did
a system restore to at least regain the previous functionality. Oh, and I
changed the registered owner name too with the program Nass recommended on
line.

You think if I call Microsoft – for the $49 – they might actually have some
idea what’s going on?

Thanks for all your efforts to help.

Sorry to hear nothing helped. That's as far as I can suggest you go.

Well, either they have an answer, or you get your $49 back -- so it's worth
a shot. If that doesn't work (or you just don't want to pay for the
support), then I'd do as Nass suggested -- clean install of Win XP. That's
the only sure-fire way to get things back to normal.

Best Wishes,
Kurosh
