Uninstalling a duplicate version of Windows XP

I recently got locked out of my Windows XP Pro Edition operating system. It
was suggested to me that I reinstall the operating system in order to access
it (even though I would lose all my files and essentially have to start
over). I did this, and ever since I reinstalled Windows XP Pro Edition from
the installation CD, when I start my computer up, I have to choose from a
list of two operating systems, both being Windows XP Pro Edition. Apparently,
when I reinstalled my operating system, it didn't install over the old
version. How do I rid my computer of the old one without effecting the
operation of and installed programs in the new version?
