I'm really stuck, my kid and his buddies "decided" to upgrade our win98 to
XP, probaby from a copied disc. Now I want to uninstall XP and go back to
win98, but all the steps I get off microsoft support don't work; from the
command prompt when I run osunistall.exe I get a message that says my XP is
not registered (no kidding) and so I cant proceed. Also, the cd-rom does not
work period and floppy3.5 aks to format everything I put into it. All I can
d owith XP is email and web. All program files were backed-up to a compressed
flash drive, that XP can't open. any ideas folks on getting back to normal
with 98?

Tom;
Go to Add/Remove Programs and see if there is an option to uninstall Windows
XP, it may not be there.
If that option is not there, you will need to install Windows 98 from
scratch.
You should take this to a Windows 98 newsgroup:

Surely your son has the intelligence to do this. You could supervise and
don't pay him more than $10/hour. His friends could supervise you.

Unless they elected to not backup the existing OS during the upgrade
then it should be present. The default/recommended choice is to backup,
so hopefully this is the case for the OP.

The one machine I had to remove an unauthorized upgrade to XP went fine,
however I tok the precaution of removing any XP specific updates,
hotfixes and software first. After reverting back to 98 I only had to
re-install a couple of 98 specific drivers and software.

The normal way to "uninstall" any operating system is to format
the hard drive and install a new OS of your choice.

Only if you performed an upgrade from Win98/Me, elected to backup
the old system files, and didn't convert the partition to NTFS, can
you then boot into Safe Mode and click Start > Control Panel
Add/Remove Programs. All of these conditions must be met for the
uninstall option to be available.
