win98 to XP or Vista

HI

I just bought a new home computer. My old one had Win98 and of course lots
of programs and stuff that I want to keep.

the new one has XP and I can get the free upgrade to Vista.

Question: Do I want to go from using WIN98 to XP and then wait on Vista
or do I want to go straight from win98 to using vista?

peace

You're life is going to suck either way - in as far as a learning curve
goes.
Might as well go all the way to Vista. At least be 'current' for a few
years.

However, I doubt the hardware will support Vista.

Since it comes with XP...
I'd stay with XP.

XP is a proven good OS...and Vista still has a few bugs to be worked out

Exactly. Unless Vista has some feature that you absolutely need (can't
imagine for the life of me what that would be :) I'd stick with XP. I'd
give Vista a good year so MS can iron out the wrinkles, bugs, security
issues, incompatibilities, etc.

I'm pretty sure it will support vista...

"...just bought a new home computer..."
"...has XP and I can get the free upgrade to Vista..."

And from the wording of the rest of the post - I assume they are wondering
if they should upgrade the Windows XP machine to Windows Vista or just stick
with Windows XP. If they have not gotten used to Windows XP yet - they
would probably be better off going through one steep learning curve (just
Vista) than two learning curves (Windows XP from Windows 98 and then Vista
from Windows XP).

They do not say they are upgrading Windows 98 - they say they are going from
USING Windows 98 to... whatever OS.

So - since the machine is 'new' and came with a 'free upgrade to Vista' -->
I bet it works with Visat. How well - that's another story. ;-)

hungryjack,

You DO NOT want to upgrade that Win98 machine to Vista. Some of the
hardware and most of the software in Win98 is considered obsolete in
Vista and would make much more sense to upgrade it to WinXP. Just
make sure to backup every file you deem necessary first before
performing the upgrade...

Hungry Jack,

I would stick with XP for a few years. Vista isn't much better than XP
except for the eye candy. Do you know how many service packs Windows 2000 had
to go through? 4!!! I'm expecting Vista to have around 3, because I just
heard about a vulnerability in vista in which a hacker can take over the
voice command feature in vista and kill your machine.

On most of our computers we use XP with the 'Classic' desktop. This is much
like Windows 2000, and a 98-user would have no trouble getting to grips with
it.

Most people say they can't see the point in the XP-style startmenu, let
alone the Vista one. The 'multimedia clutter' -and lack of commonly used
items like Word/Excel shortcuts- just makes navigation so much more
difficult. The Win2000 arangement was far cleaner and more functional.

I doubt if any of your Win 98 programs will run on Vista.
Some of the programs will run on XP.

Which version of XP?

If you want to use the computer, use XP.
It could be a few weeks before you get the Vista upgrade.

I'd go with XP - most of your programs for Win 98 will be more likely to run
under XP than on Vista - unless you get Designed-for-Vista versions of that
software.

That's NOT the question. OP has bought a new "Vista Capable" machine,
that ships with XP installed.

I think perhaps it is you that needs to re-read the original posting. He
explained very clearly that he already had XP on the NEW computer.

Read the question on OP's initial post:

McFly,

Read the whole thing and use your cognative skills to put together that the
OP is not upgrading the old Windows 98 machine to Windows Vista (or even
asking about it.)

The OP is merely stating that they have been using Windows 98 on an old
machine up to this point. They JUST bought a new machine. That new machine
came with Windows XP and a free upgrade to Windows Vista.

What they want to know is if they should get the free upgrade to Vista and
therefore - go from USING Windows 98 to USING Windows Vista - or if they
should, instead, just leave the new machine at Windows XP and go from USING
Windows 98 to USING Windows XP.

They *USE* Windows 98 now on their old machine.
Their NEW machine came with Windows XP and a chance to upgrade to Windows
Vista.
They want to know if they should start USING the new machine with XP or
upgrade and start USING the new machine with Vista.

The key word in the OPs original post was 'USING'.
