uninstall windows xp home

Hello and please help. I have windows xp home on my computer. I would like to
uninstall it and do a clean reinstall with the same xp disks that came with
this computer. I just bought a new computer with vista on it. I'm giving my
old computer to my hometown old age home and want my stuff to come off and
have it running like it came out of the box. Can anyone talk me thru this?

The normal way to "uninstall" any operating system is to format
the hard drive and install a new OS of your choice.

Simply boot from the WinXP installation CD. You'll be offered the
opportunity to delete, create, and format partitions as part of the
installation process. (You may need to re-arrange the order of boot
devices in the PC's BIOS to boot from the CD.)

You don't tell us quite enough information.
If you computer is a typical big-name brand computer, (HP, Compaq, Acer, etc.) most likely the disks
you got with it are "restore" disks.
Put the CD marked disk one in the drive and restart the computer and follow the on screen
instructions.
If your disk is a Microsoft Windows CD, or a Dell CD, do the same thing, but follow the instructions
for an "Installation" not a repair.

Tell us more about the make and model of your computer and what the disks look like and we can give
you detailed instructions.

If I understand you correctly - you have an older computer that came with
Windows XP Home Edition and since you have a new computer, you will be
giving your old computer away. Before you do this - you wish to ensure that
the computer has nothing of yours left on it and that it is running at its
best/cleanest.

- I suggest you make sure you have everything off it you want (backed up to
external media.)
- I suggest you use Belarc Advisor to get a list of software/hardware in the
syetsm before you do anything else (print it out.)
- I suggest you download (and save to external media) Windows XP SP2 and
Windows XP SP3 (full install files) for easy patching after you finish the
initial install.

Then... Well - it doesn;t get much easier than this:

The computer is a HP and I have the disks that came with the computer. I
tried to put the disk in but it said that the computer had a newer version
and could not delete it

P.S.:
Read the steps carefully and don't make the "standing on the rug and trying
to pick it up without getting off it" error.

You have gotten plenty of advice on the installation so I will point out
another consideration. Even though you are going to format the partition,
the data that is not overwritten by the reinstallation will remain and can
easily be retrieved with inexpensive software. I therefore recommend that
once you have the system reinstalled with patches, drivers, etc., installed,
overwrite the remaining "free" space on the drive with
Eraser: http://www.heidi.ie/eraser/ Freeware that overwrites the "blank"
data on a
hard drive.

That's normal, due to all of the updates and service packs you've
installed since getting the computer.

Don't try to start the setup from within Windows. Rather, simply boot
from the Recovery CD and follow the on-screen prompts to wipe the hard
drive clean and start afresh.
