I have a new computer with XP Home preinstalled. At first
this was OK - not as good as 98SE - but at least it
worked. Lately it has got slower and slower, sometime
freezing. On start up it displays "Windows has recovered
from a serious error". I have not installed any new
hardware.

I have tried the recovery disk supplied with the computer
but all this has done is give me a second user and most
of the peripherals including the modem do not now work.

How do I uninstall and reinstall ?

Is it true that you cannot uninstall XP and reinstall
98SE ?

Put in the recovery cd and follow the instructions to format the c: drive
and restore the computer back to the day you bought it.

If your computer came with XP preinstalled, you need to read your
system documentation or contact your OEM for help in
reinstalling.

Of course not. You can remove any operating system, and you can
install any operating system for which you meet the hardware
requirements. If you meet the hardware requirements for XP, you
meet them for 98.
