uninstall problems

I am having trouble removing utility programmes which I
installed from magazine discs. When I go to "add/remove
programme" facility (XP Home) some of the programmes are
not even listed and others throw up error messages
e.g. "cannot open install.log" or similar, when I try to
uninstall them.
Can anyone help me please, my computer is becoming very
cluttered.
