My oe keeps freezing o a certain email. Is it possible to uninstall and
reinstall-I know I'll loose all saved emails. Where do I go to get it to
reinstall?

Search for msoe50.inf(The default location is C:\Windows\Inf folder) Right
click the Msoe50.inf file, and click Install. Insert XP CD when prompted,
Browse to the I386 folder, click Open, then OK.

There are a couple of options you could try:

1. Delete the trouble message:

I assume that your OE is freezing when you are either opening or viewing the
one e-mail. Turn off your "Preview" pane, and then select the message (in
your Inbox list) and delete it. Restart OE, and turn your "Preview" pane
back on (if desired).

2. Backup and restore your OE Inbox:

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/270670/en-us?spid=2578&sid=global

Just follow the steps related to your "messages" (backup and restore).
Before doing the restore part, close OE and delete the Inbox.dbx file in your
"Store folder". Start OE, and let it rebuild the Inbox.dbx file. You will
see your Inbox is now empty. Then follow the restore part to restore just
your "Inbox". By importing the messages, it may fix the problem with that
one message.

If neither of these work, there are programs available that can "fix" your
folders. Just do a Google search -- last time I checked, they were not free.

Best Wishes,

Mark,

I've been trying to reinstall OE using the procedure you outlined but Setup
complains it can't find 9xmig.dll. I've tried to search for it without
success. Any idea where it might be located? Or can I safely tell Setup to
skip this file?

Thanks. That did the trick. Setup ran to completion without any further
hiccoughs.

Regrettably, however, the reinstall hasn't resolved my problems.

Sorry, what was the problem again? You can't open just a certain E-mail
but everything else works fine, or?

No, my problem is much more severe than that. It began when my defective
broadband modem was replaced. The new one came with updated software which,
when I installed it, added a 'Search' pane to the bottom of the OE main
window. It did this unnanounced - no confirmatory prompt - and I have made my
displeasure known to my ISP.

I tried without success to remove this pane then a few days later when I
launched OE I found the pane had expanded to fill the window so that now I
can't access any of my mail folders. If I try to select a folder from the
Main menu whatever is selected remains hidden behind this parasitic pane.
See this screenshot.

As I said earlier, reinstalling OE from the XP CD has not cured this
problem. If anyone has any ideas I'd be most grateful. At the moment it looks
like the only way to cure this will be to do yet another clean install of XP
(this will be the third).

This sounds like your ISP has given you a mail and/or browser program they
would like you to use. They do that to get advertising revenue. You should
make sure (if you prefer) that OE is your default mail program and IE is
your default browser. .

Whatever they've done my Outlook Express is now unusable and as far as I can
see, because it is so tightly integrated into XP, I'm now going to have to do
another total reinstall which is a real pain.

A while back, Microsoft had, on their site, a method to repair OE. Search MS
to see if they still have it.

I'm sure your modem can be used without the software that came with it.
You just need to know what the settings should be in Internet Protocol
(TCP/IP) Properties. I would uninstall the software to see if that gets
rid of the annoying search pane. Otherwise, try the methods mentioned in
the links of my other post. A Repair Install is always an option if
nothing else works, but I doubt that a clean install is necessary.

I had a similar intractable problem with OE6. I now use Thunderbird.
It works extremely well, and I can't see myself going back to OE.
No problems with changing over as Thunderbird imports all your messages,
addresses etc. Highly recommended.
I just wish I had installed it straight away instead of wasting three
days trying to find a genuine repair of OE!

Jim.
