I have been using an external hard drive and a card reader for some time but
yesterday tried fitting a new USB port. Now everything else works except mass
storage devices and my microsoft intelipoint mouse. I cannot find any
reference to drivers or files for them anywhere. I have an installation disk
for the card reader end even that will not be supported. Can anybody help me
re-instate the necessary bits as the first year of my Granddaughters life is
on that hard drive. Thanks a lot.

I don't know what you mean by "fitting a new USB port" but I do know
that there is a limit to the power available to operate USB devices, and
if you exceed the limit one or more USB devices will fail.

sorry if I did not make myself clear. I was actually replacing a USB PCI
card. (my old one was damaged) so I was left with the same ammount of ports
when finished. I have also re-fitted the old on in an effort to see if this
corrects the fault. I no longer seem to have any source for these devices in
the register.

Okay, now I get it. I was think more along the lines of what devices you
had plugged into USB. Sorry, and there's where my expertise on your
issue ends, unfortunately.

Thanks for replying!!

first sorry if this is double posted got an error on first reply, but if
double other info is added.

I had the same issues with my cd/dvd drives a while back.
go to My Computer, right click and select 'device manager'
expand the section for disk drives. if the device/drivers is working you
will see the drive there.

if not working you will see the unknown with a yellow caution sign. this
usually indicates corrupt drivers.

uninstall all drivers concerning the device and PCI card. then re-install
them.
sometimes just re-installing over does not solve the problem without first
removing the corrupt files.

while your in the device manager expand all the sections to see if anything
else has the caution sign.

if reinstalling the drivers from the PCI card fails, select the device in
the manager, right click and try the update drivers option for the external
drive (will be tagged USB device) setting it to search microsoft for drivers.

it just might be that your main USB driver is corrupt, go to the section in
the manager for Universal Serial Bus Controllers, right click on each and
update driver.
if there is a problem with the main USB drivers this should catch it.

hope this helps, I'd hate for you to lose photos of your grandchildren.

also make sure all connections are secure, is the PCI card fully inserted in
the slot, is the usb device securely plugged in at both ends, and (sometimes
the simplest mistakes we all make) is the device turned on? does it have
power that is plugged in (a power pack) rather than taking power from the usb
port.

one more thought...

if you can't get the usb driver thing worked out you could pull the drive
out of the external enclosure and install it directly in your computer.

how old is the external drive? the drive it self may be having problems.
if you get the drivers worked out but still cannot access the drive this
might the case.

if so don't throw it away or lose hope just yet.

if all else fails put the drive in the freezer (yes you read right) for a
few hours (at least 4, the longer frozen the longer you will have to access
data before the drive crashes if this is the problem.)
pull it out, and immediately (while still frozen) try accessing the drive
again. but before doing this search the internet for related stuff I have
never done it but heard it works, search it out so you know exactly what to
do.

sometimes drives get corrupt and sometime this helps. gives you one more
chance so save stuff.

if so get everything of value off that drive now as you may not get back in.
