unicode to ASCII conversion

How do I convert a WORD file containing foreign language characters (with
dicritical marks) to the equivalent English language version in ASCII
characters only. The available WORD conversion from a unicode *.doc file to
a ASCII *.txt file substitutes a question mark for the foreign language
characters. I just want to delete the diacritical marks.

Found the answer! I just needed to convert the *.doc file to Plain Text
*.txt by selecting Other Encoding = US-ASCII and checking the Allow
Character Substitution option. This last item is what I was missing.
