Unexpected shutdown, lost file

A file was open on Access 2002 (with a 2000 format file) when my laptop ran
out of battery. When I tried to later open my file, it was gone, unrecognized
and no backup anywhere on the hard disk to recover or repair (path no longer
valid, etc), though I had saved it just prior to the shutdown.
I do have a 2 week old backup on a thumbdrive, but should I not work off
this at all and wait to take my laptop to a recovery specialist, or is it
completely unrecoverable? I'm doing research in China and don't know the
language to ask for specific help anyway.

FYI, saving isn't going to help in a system crash as you are now painfully
aware. If you're doing important work, close the database and make a *copy*
of the mdb file.

During development and bulk data entry, I do this every couple of hours.
Sometimes more frequently.

Keep asking yourself, "Is this something I want to redo if I have a
problem?" If the answer is no, then stop and make a copy.
