Unexpected Outgoing eMail

A

Allan

Occasionally, when I send/receive email, I notice that my antivirus software
appears to be scanning an extra outgoing email. This is particularly
evident when I know that I am only sending one email, but I can see scanning
indicated for 1 of 2, and 2 of 2. On checking my "sent" folder, there is no
evidence of an extra email, and I know that I have not replied to an email
within a folder other than my inbox where replies would be stored. I have
set my options to never send a receipt for incoming email. Interestingly,
this never seems to happen when my outbox is empty before I send/receive.

My configuration is Windows XP Pro, Office XP (I never use Outlook Express
for email), Norton System Works 2003 with Personal Firewall, and a D-Link
firewall. I update software daily, run an antivirus scan daily, and update
D-Link firmware monthly. I also run AdAware, SpyBot, and SpySweeper weekly.

Advice? Is there undetected spy ware? Is NSW erroneously reporting the
number of outgoing messages being scanned? Help!

Allan, is it possible 2 pages of 1 email are being
scanned. I'm not sure if this is how antivirus scans a 2
or more page email.
Just a thought.

This is fine - don't worry about it. It's a default setting to scan any
email INCASE it is carry a virus as a precaution so you don't spread
anything even if you don't have one

I am concerned because it appears that there is an EXTRA email being sent
without my knowledge.

No, my observation is that lengthy emails still count as one, irrespective
of how many "pages" there might be.

Allan;
Turn off your E-mail scanning. You don't need it and it can mess up OE.
From Tom Koch.[These are not necessary to protect your computer if you still
have VirusScan running in the background and scanning executable files as they
are opened. In fact, the only real reason to use email and download scanning is
to make you feel more secure.]

Allan

I will probably turn it off in the future, but right now it may be providing
me with evidence of malicious activity within my computer. I'd first like
to find out what is going on.

Allan;
I re-read your first post. I thought you said you were using OE, but you
said, "I never use Outlook Express for email." What are you using for E-mail?
"Specifies that you want Outlook Express to warn you when another program
tries to send a message to contacts in your Address Book or contacts list
without your approval. Viruses can spread by sending copies of e-mail messages
containing the virus to your contacts."

I use OutlookXP (part of OfficeXP) as my only email client. I use OE only
for news groups.

If a sender has asked for a confirmation of receipt of his
message and you don't save sent messages you will
experience the situation that you describe.
