Unecessary programs?

J

JJ

I was reviewing my programs in control panel and I found some programs that I
do not think I ever use or need and want to know if I can delete them without
interfering with some other programs or operations.

Apple Modile Device Support: I do not own or use any Apple products.

Apple Software Update: I still do not own or use any Apple products.

Quicktime: If I use Windows Media Player do I still need Quicktime?

I see a banner on top of the screen 'Click Here to Install Silverlight' What
is Silverlight?

You might as well leave Quicktime on the machine...
there could be some animated data that requires it.

As to Silverlight...juts put it into a Google search

I am aware that Quicktime is an Apple product. But since I have Windows Media
Player but no Apple mobile devices, I was trying to find out if I needed to
retain any of the Apple related software.

If you do not intend or can not answer my inquiries, I would prefer that you
do not reply.

If you view .mov files you will need either Quicktime or a viewer that
supports them. Apple is the owner of Quicktime so that is likely how you
ended up with the Apple references. As for Silverlight it is the next
generation of .NET and being pushed by Microsoft http://silverlight.net/

Once Microsoft starts with something like this you might as well knuckle
under and accept it as they simply become increasingly more aggressive in
pushing it forward. Take a look at IE 7. It is considered to be a critical
update. Sooner than later Silverlight will also be forced upon us.

Because some digital cameras use .Quicktime for their file format the camera
software often installs Quicktime. I recently installed Cyberlink
Powerdirector and it installed Quicktime.

I believe the part that may have offended Colin Barnhorst was the obvious
lack of any effort to find the answer to any question you had *other* than
asking here. Then again - Colin may have not been offended at all, may have
just been pointing out a mistake obvious to them.

In any case - in order:

"Apple Mobile Device Support"...
http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=what+is+"Apple+Mobile+Device+Support"
One link found with the above Google Search states, "Apple says, it
"Provides the interface to Apple mobile devices."", so one could take other
parts of your postings and assume that you, in fact, do not need this
particular application/service. You are insistent about 'not own or use any
Apple products...'

"Apple Software Update"...
http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=what+is+"Apple+Software+Update"
One link found with the above Google Search states, "installs the latest
version of Apple software on computers", so one could take other parts of
your postings and assume that you, in fact, do not need this particular
application/service. However - you are still insistent that you do not own
or use any Apple products, although the next part of your posting seems to
contradict that...

"Quicktime"...
Not that the two other bits of software weren't Apple products (that you do
not own or use), but this is likely how they got installed. At some point
you (or someone on your computer or perhaps the manufacturer) installed
Apple Quicktime. It would have - by default - installed the rest. Perhaps
you visited a web page that had a quicktime video and just told it that it
was okay to install whatever you needed - who knows. In any case...
http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=what+is+"Quicktime"
One link found with the above Google Search states that Quicktime is "a
multimedia framework developed by Apple Inc. capable of handling various
formats of digital video, media clips, sound, text, animation, music, and
several types of interactive panoramic images.", which is correct.
Quicktime animations/movies run rampant on the Internet.

"If I use Windows Media Player do I still need Quicktime?"...
Open-ended question. No one can accurately answer it without putting
limitations of some sort on it.

First - Windows Media Player *will not* natively play all formats of
video/audio you might run into out in the real world. There are just too
many. And sometimes - it might play them, but not as well.

Secondly - What version of Windows Media Player are we even talking about
here? One can assume (but it is an assumption) that you are running Windows
XP, so you probably have either v9, 10 or 11 of Windows Media Player... You
could also be using some version of Windows Media Player Classic (6.4)...

Some animations and such on various web pages are not going to be visible to
you without Quicktime or perhaps an alternative made to replace it:
http://www.free-codecs.com/download/QuickTime_Alternative.htm

How do you utilize Windows Media Player and what do you use your computer
for and do you foresee ever - in your lifetime with this computer - changing
what you might need on it?

The short answer is, "Maybe, maybe not. That answer is something only you
can come up with as we have no information to support any answer, one way or
another."

"Silverlight"...
I am sure you are about to see a pattern here - but I will explain that
later...
http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=what+is+"Silverlight"
One link found with the above Google Search states that Silverlight
"provides graphical and animation display, with multimedia and interactivity
built in". Some call it "Microsoft's competition with Adobe's Flash
product"...

The short answer to several of your questions are the same. Whether or not
you need it is not something anyone here can tell you directly as no one
here sits around and monitors your computer usage every minute (if they do -
doubtful they are going to admit it here. hah) You have to research what it
is you are going to remove and then decide if you ever run across a need for
it or not during your normal daily use of your computer. Certainly, having
Quicktime installed is not harmful for most. Neither is having the rest you
have listed.

Beyond that - to explain how I came at the answers I have give to you is
very simple:

Search using Google!
http://www.google.com/
(How-to: http://www.google.com/intl/en/help/basics.html )

I suggest Google only because it seems to be the most popular, really.
Everyone knows its name. Many times I utilize a product known as
"WebFerret" that searches using several search engines - Google not being
one of them actually. But - the premise is the same. While asking is easy,
when the question is easy to find the answer for - sometimes it is still
less trouble than asking to find the answer. ;-)

You dont delete them, you uninstall using the Add/remove dialogue.
What is installed by the PC supplier depends on whose products they are
promoting
If you uninstall Quicktime, you can simply download / install from Apple.com
if you find the need at a later date

Uncle Grumpy,

I recently installed *just* Quicktime and "Apple Software Update" gets
installed with that as well (by default), it seems. I cannot confirm/deny
whether or not you have to install iTunes to get "Apple Mobile Device
Support" installed.

Looks like Apple is becoming as obnoxious as Real Player! ;->

Thank you for your thoughtful and comprehensive response to my questions.

Yes, it is certainly possible that I downloaded quicktime when I was
visiting a website and had forgotten that I had done so. I am using Windows
Media Player 11. Of cousre, I do not know if I will ever need Quicktime in
the future so your suggestion to keep it available makes a very good sense.
Thank you.

quicktime is an apple product
and likely got installed covertly
when it piggy back another
program.

if i am not mistaken, programs
like acrobat is linked to quicktime
as well. perhaps some freeware
graphics programs installed it for
viewing animated gif projects.

in any case, i un installed quicktime
a few years ago and haven't needed
since.

what you can probably do if you
can't figure out how to remove
the rotten apples is to simply
delete their start up entries,
services in admin tools and
basically delete their folders
in program files.

then run a registry cleaner.
