Undeletable Icons

B

Bill

I now seemed to have solved the problem of the (Poker Travel Bingo
Card Games Printer Cartridges etc)

Went through all the lines in MSCONFIG and found that the responsible
script was as follows

Start up item - Corn Wave
Command - C:\Documents and Settings\all users\application data\mpeg
flap deaf road\corn wave.exe
Location - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Currentversion\run

I then deleted folder \mpeg flap deaf road\ and the Corn Wave.exe

This (touch wood) has got rid of the icons

However see below for posting that suggests that the directory and
..exe could be called something else.

Earlier today, one of my two teenagers somehow installed something
that put
up the following seven new icons on my desktop. - Website Hosting,
Bingo,
Casino Online, Printer Cartridges, Card Games, Poker and Travel

They weren't deletable and came back whenever I re-booted.

Ad-Aware and Spybot didn't find anything.

After experimenting with msconfig, I found that they were caused by
the
following in the startup script

c:\documents and settings\all users\application data\grid ref that
face\magstray.exe

I have now disabled this line in the startup script and deleted the
"grid
ref that face" folder and this seems to fix the problem.

However, I can't find anything about this on the internet, e.g. google
can't
find anything when I search for magstray, magstray.exe or "grid ref
that
face". So does anyone know anything about this.

Also, how do I get rid of that line from the startup script. Its still
there, but disabled.

Bill,
Have you installed Messenger Plus (a third-party program... not from
Microsoft) from http://www.msgplus.net/ or another download site? Messenger
Plus comes with "Sponsor software" but can be installed without it.

Just investigating...

I am having the same problem, and thanks to this post I found a folder called
"dog creative meta comp" in Application Data that seems to be causing those
seven icons. But when I try to delete it, I get the message that it is in
use (Cannot delete: it is being used by another person or program). How do I
bypass this?

Thanks.

Hi,
From the Start button... Start> Run> (type in) msconfig (OK)
Go to the Startup tab. Look for an entry like

Command - C:\Documents and Settings\all users\application data\dog creative
meta comp
Location - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Currentversion\run

Uncheck that entry and restart the machine. You should be able to delete the
file in Application Data.

Alternately, from Crl-Alt-Del> Processes, you should be able to right-click
that process and end it, then delete the file.

Please post back if this doesn't work for you.

Also, have you installed Messenger Plus (a third-party program... not from

Thank you so much for the help!
I did find and disable that line from the Startup tab in msconfig, but after
restarting, I was still unable to delete the file in the "dog creative meta
comp" folder. It's called "comp move.exe". I looked at the processes, but I
don't see anything with that name or anything that looks related to Messenger
Plus.
Apparently I did install Messenger Plus at some point. I just uninstalled
it using add/remove software and it said the uninstall was successful, but I
still can't delete the file.
I also tried ending the msmsgs.exe process, but that didn't allow me to
delete it either. Is it possible for a process to occur without being listed
there?
Again, thank you for the help. I have been asking friends about this for
days to no avail.

Two things you might try:
Startup in Safe Mode
http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPOR...2001052409420406?OpenDocument&src=sec_doc_nam
Then try to delete the [dog creative~]folder again.

Download and reinstall Messenger Plus http://www.msgplus.net/download.php
then uninstall it by the book
