UNC path to Print Server

D

Dan Williams

Can anyone advise me as to what my UNC path would be to our HP JetDirect
200m print server and hence our HP D155xi OfficeJet Multifunction printer.

On installing the HP software supplied, it simply sets up a local standard
TCP/IP port and shares that.
Surely thats no different than setting up the printer on a local parallel
port and sharing that? What exactly is the point of the print server, apart
from having it located away from a PC??

For example, i've setup the print server on IP address 192.168.0.20 and i've
setup its hostname to equal JETDIRECT. Its HP name is J6039B.

I've tried the following UNC paths but have so far not been able to connect
to it:-

\\192.168.0.20\hpofficejet
\\JETDIRECT\hpofficejet
\\J6039B\hpofficejet

The only way i've managed to get other computers to access it is by setting
up one computer with a local standard TCP/IP port and sharing it. The
only other way is to setup each computer with local ports but then i have to
ensure they have the correct software drivers installed too! Very messy!

I eventually want to create a login script to use con2prt.exe, dependant on
the computer name.

Thanks in advance

You would need to get a printer network card that supports UNC paths. I
have seen ones from Intel and Epson but I'm pretty sure HP has never
supported SMB protocol on their Printer NICs. They do have a print server
appliance that supports UNC paths.
