Ihave a sony laptop with a sony dvd writer.Upto about three weeks ago i could
burn to cds and dvds using sonic or windows media. Now the empty disc is
recognised and the programme says burn complete , finalising and the cd is
ejected;however on inspection the cd/dvd is still empty/unwritten to.Do i
need to change the sony dvd writer or is there a fix.
Thanks. samoon

If you have alternative burning software try using it instead of the software
you're using when that happens.

You could also try removing the drive from the Device Manager (enter
devmgmt.msc in the start => run box). Reboot and allow XP to reinstall the
drivers.

Thanks Eric. I've already done what you suggested except the alternative
burning software.I've 3 ,sonic record now , window media & creative , and all
say burn successful but the disc is still empty. I've tried different brands
of discs, including sony's own.No luck.

A good way to test if the problem is caused by hardware (faulty drive
that will need to be replaced) or software is to boot with Knoppix, a
Linux distro that runs from cd. If you can't burn a disk in Knoppix,
then you know you'll need to contact Sony tech support for replacement
of the drive. Here's information about Knoppix:

To get Knoppix, you need a computer with a fast Internet connection and
third-party burning software. Since your problem is with burning cd's,
do this from another machine with a known-working burner. Download the
Knoppix .iso from www.knoppix.net and create your bootable cd. Then
boot your laptop with it and it will be able to see the Windows files.
Note that the default mouse action in the window manager used by
Knoppix (KDE) is a single click to open instead of the traditional MS
Windows' double-click. Use the K3b burning program to try and burn some
of your files.
