Unable to view, move, delete some files.

I copied some pictures from my digital camera to my computer, and a good
portion of the files I am unable to view, move or delete. If I try to open
in Microsoft Photo Editor it says :Can't Determine Type. If I try to delete
it, it says:Error deleting file or folder, Cannot delete file: Access is
Denied. Make sure the disk is not full or write protected and that the file
is not currently in use. The files don't have read-only attributes, but I
have tried to change the attributes, and I get an error message stating: An
error occurred applying attributes to the file: Access is Denied.

The same pictures were copied to other computers without incident, both
before and after this occurred.

The following error message

"Access is Denied. Make sure the disk is not full or write protected and
that the file
is not currently in use"

will be displayed if any program is using the file i.e., the file is 'open'.

1. Close any photo viewing/editing software that are currently open.

2. Take a look at the Task Manager's Processes tab and make sure that no
processes relating to those photo viewing/editing applications are running.
If there are any, right click on the process and select 'End Process' to end
them.

If you sre still unable to access/edit/delete the files, try logging off
and/or restarting your PC.

I have tried restarting my PC numerous times, and have logged off/logged back
on. I even tried to copy those pictures from my laptop (where they work
fine) to a different folder on my PC and got similar results (not the same
files but different ones this time will give me the above errors). Defrag and
Scandisk are run frequently and report no problems. Even after rebooting I
still cannot do anything with the files.

If the files that are causing you the trouble are the only copies you have,
then I don't think I have anymore ideas :-( sorry !

On the other hand, if you have copies of those files and you want to delete
them, you can use (not the best of ideas) a file shredder or something like
that. If you have Download Accelerator Plus 8, a file shredder comes with it,
and there are lots more for free in the Internet.

Hope this helps.

Finally..

Some of my issues may be due to security descriptors. I'm trying to reset
folder permissions on the entire drive and see if that helps any.

It looks like this KB article might answer some if the issues, hopefully
everything was tied to this, one way or another... :

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/810881/en-us

Although, most of the problems I was experiencing occurred with files
created after the last install of Windows over the current volume. I'll know
more after it finishes updating everything.
