For the NAS, check with the NAS mftr. for a firmware update. For RH,
make sure you're using the latest version of Samba. I don't know why the
Vista Home Premium registry change didn't work for you and I don't have
a RH box to test. I'm assuming that you set up Samba correctly in RH
since you've got other boxen working fine in the network. I wouldn't
want to insult you by asking if you're sure you added this new user to
both RH and Samba.

I can't tell you whether there is a problem connecting to devices
running Samba that is specific to Home Premium or not and I don't have
Home Premium installed on anything. I'll have to set up a virtual
machine with one and I don't have time right now.

I can tell you that my Ultimate install would not allow the connection
to my Linux and OS X boxen until I made the secpol change. If the change
using secpol produces the same result as the Home Premium registry edit,
then the problem has to lie elsewhere. So there isn't any point in
spending the money to upgrade and then finding out it didn't work.

I am in complete agreement with you that this is a perfect example of
Microsoft systems not playing well with others. With Microsoft's vaunted
claims of working with open source, I had hoped for better
compatibility. Instead we find that in this area - and in other areas -
once again MS has created proprietary structures that don't work well
with the rest of the world.

I'm sorry but I don't know what else to suggest to you. Perhaps running
Services for Unix (just a WAG)? Or contact Vista tech support.

I'm truly sorry I was unable to solve this for you.

I'm glad to hear that the firmware update and secpol change helped with
the NAS. I don't know what to tell you about the RH server's printer
share. If you figure it out, please do post back.

Good luck,

Malke
