Unable to timeout to Hibernate with Internet connection

I am sure this is something that must have come up before but, although
I have searched, I haven't found any references to this actual problem.

When my machine is connected to the Internet it will not go into
Hibernate after the inactivity time preset in the Power Option
Properties.

This is on an XP Pro SP2 with all of the updates from MS now installed,
but that have not changed the functionality of this feature.

At first I though that something might be active through the net
connection. So I set the System Hibernates time to 1min (ie. minimum) on
the Power Option Properties and watched the net connection status to
make sure that no data transferred across it during that time, but the
machine just ignores the timeout and refuses to hibernate. I have
everything that should be talking on the net shut down, so didn't expect
any data transfer, but you never know.

I have seen lots of references to losing the net connection after
hibernation, inability to hibernate with shared net connections, but
nothing about this particular problem.

The machine hibernates fine, even when connected to the net, through the
manual Start|Shutdown|<shift>-Standby sequence. It also hibernates
through the power timeout sequence when the Internet connection is
closed.

I would like it to hibernate if left on its own for half an hour or so
even when connected and I am sure that some friends' machines do this. I
just can't figure out what is wrong with this one.

Any ideas?

I guess it hasn't come up before then...
Doesn't anyone have any ideas about the cause of this malady or what can
be done to resolve it?
