unable to start XP Home due to corrupt or missing file

I am having difficulty starting up Win XP Home, hopefully someone could point
me in the right direction on resolving this issue. During start up, an error
comes up stating, "Windows could not start because the following file is
missing or corrupt:
\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\CONFIG\SYSTEM" then it goes on to say "You can attempt to
repair this file by starting windows setup using the original setup CD-ROM."
So, I insert the original disk, setup begins, then asks to either set up Win
XP, repair Win XP, or quit setup. If I choose to either set up or repair Win
XP I get a REGISTRY_ERROR the technical info is *** STOP: 0x00000051
(0x00000003,0x00000001, 0x00006000,0xE11EB060)

I am unable to start the machine by pressing F8 on start up in safe mode, or
any other options displayed on that screen, when I attempt to do so the
original error comes up, but I am able to access the bios. Now this is where
I'm at a
loss, if anyone could point me in the right direction to resolve this issue I
would appriciate it. Thanks.

I'm no expert, but the problem you're having sounds very much like what I
just went through after installing SP2. In my case, I had to return the
desktop to the manufacturer (Gateway) who had to reinstall the XP operating
system. Everything on the hard drive was lost. Sorry my story isn't more
positive. Hope someone has a magic workaround for you.
