How Do I Restore/Repair Missing/Corrupt System File?

I turned on my computer and as it was starting up I accidentally turned off
the power strip on the floor, shutting off the computer. Now, when I try to
start up the computer I get the following error message: "Windows could not
start because the following file is missing or corrupt:
\windows\system32\config\system. You can attempt to repair this file by
starting Windows Setup using the original Setup CD-ROM. Select ' r ' at the
first screen to start repair."

I tried the above suggestion by using the original Setup CD-ROM to start
Windows Setup and selecting ' r ' but after that I see the following, c:
windows>. I don't know how to proceed from here. Any suggestions? Thanks.

Bert,

No, I'm not able to boot in Safe Mode. I'm going to try the suggestion made
by Ricky and Remy ("How to recover from a corrupted registry that prevents
Windows XP from starting"). I printed the 6 pages of instructions and am
still trying to digest all that information before I proceed. Thanks.
