Windows XP laptop. Increasingly I have to use a boot disk to get computer
going. sometimes even the boot disk does not succeed. How is this fixed?

Can we assume you checked the boot order in the BIOS and changed it as
needed?

probably your master boot record damaged to fix this you can try this

install recovery console from product cd and run this commands fixmbr, fixboot
after this your boot sector will be create and you can boot your comp.
without boot disk

While the system is booting there is usually a message on the screen saying
to hit a certain key to get into the BIOS; on mine it is the DEL key. (Check
your owners manual.)

You will then be in the BIOS and there will be more than one screen
detailing all the items tha can be changed. (Again, read your owners
manual.)

I cannot give specific instructions because the BIOS is not the same from
one system to another. (Read your owners manual.)
