Unable to shutdown Windows Vista, SP1

I have had my PC for over six months now and have never been able to shutdown
the computer. Every time I click on Shutdown from the Start menu I get as
far as the Logging Off message. Then a Blue Screen of Death appears and the
system hangs until I manually shutdown the computer using the power button.
The Technical message on the blue screen is as follows: Stop: 0X0000007F
(0X00000008, 0X8014D000, 0X00000000, 0X00000000). The only drivers I have
added are the print drivers for a Canon iP4200 printer. I am running Norton
360 V2.0 as my anti-virus protection. Any suggestions as to how I can
shutdown my PC gracefully, without having to manually turn it off every time?

That error can be a boot sector virus, but I doubt the system would last
that long with a virus. Probably you have a corrupt or out of date driver
for your hard drive controller, or you are seeing hard drive corruption.
Running "Error Checking" on the drive may help. (drive Properties, tools
tab). You can refresh the hard drive controller driver in Device Manager.

Go to Start/Run, and type DEVMGMT.MSC , highlight the device, Action menu,
"Uninstall", (do Not put a check in 'delete driver") then Action menu,"scan
for hardware changes", to find the device drivers again automatically.

You could try booting into safe mode by hitting F8 at startup and see if
everything runs OK there and shuts down propelry. If it works in safe mode
and shuts down OK you have a bad driver. Did you purchase the system? If so
call them and report the problem and maybe they have an answer?

Good luck, Rich

I've seen the other replies... good stuff to try.

I'd only add: have you run chkdsk on the drive? If not, highly
recommended. (The code to shut windows down might be sitting on some bad
blocks.)
