Unable to set restore point

I am completely unable to set a restore point in Vista and it is not
automatically setting them either. As as result, update installations are
failing. Is my only hope to restore my computer to factory "new" and start
all over with program installations etc?

Another thing to try,

In the disk cleanup after the next window opens,
click the other options tab and select delete all but the last restore
point.

Then reboot.
