Unable to Send using Gmail and Outlook 2003

Scott

Hello all,
I have been using Outlook 2003 and Gmail ever since Gmail started offering
PoP access, everything has been working fine. Please note that it has been
working fine, my setup is correct and I haven't changed anything except for
I had a lapse in judgemnet and installed Incredimail plugin for Outlook and
didn't like so I uninstalled it (even removing all registry entries as
instructed from the Incredimail page) and have since been unable to send
mail using Gmails smtp server. I get a error message saying my smtp server
doesn't accept ssl. Now I get this when I type an email and try to send it,
but if I go to my email account setup and click on the Gmail account and hit
Test Account Settings, it will send the message and I do get the test
message when I check mail again.
Has anybody had an problem like this before? Thanks.....

And you've verified that the "This server requires an encypted connection
(SSL)" boxes in your account properties pages (the Advanced tab) are
unchecked?

The Test Account Settings button doesn't test everything.

If the boxes I mention above are unchecked, were I you, I'd start with a new
mail profile.

Hi, Scott,

I've recently experienced the same thing. Everything worked fine until
mid-morning Saturday but after that, I'm getting the same error message on
sending. I didn't change any of the settings. Logged on today to find out
if anyone had solved it.

Thanks for the reply, I have verified that the SSL boxes are checked. I just
deleted the account and
started over and it didn't help. This is very strange, it works if I use
Thunderbird to send.
Anyone got an answer yet?
Thanks.....

Brian was asking you to verify that the SSL boxes were *un*checked - if you
check them and the server does not support SSL, you'll get the error
message you mention. *Un*check them and see if it works.

Sorry, my fault, I just gave it a try and got the following error message:
the server responded: 530.5.7.0 Must issue a StartTls Command first.

Do you have SP-1 of Outlook 2003? What's happening is that Outlook is
trying to connect to the server using SSL, but the server only supports TLS
(a different way of establishing a secure connection) so the server drops
the connection. With SP-1, I think we changed the connection logic to try
TLS first. I'm puzzled, though, because having failed to connect via SSL,
Outlook should then have tried a TLS connection, but it didn't...

Reading back through this thread, I noticed that this only happened after
you installed, then uninstalled, Incredimail. I wonder if, despite your
efforts, you haven't got rid of all traces of it.

Another question: are you trying to access your server from work, perhaps
through a proxy server (like Microsoft's ISA server)? I just got involved
today with someone here at Microsoft whose logs look an awful lot like
yours, and in his case we're suspecting a mis-configured proxy server...

Hello, I am trying both at work and home, which has pretty much the same
setup, no proxy server. You are correct
that the problem didn't start on either computer until I instaled the
Incredimail plugin, I went to the Incredimail support
page and unistalled and removed the registry entries as it instructed, but
there may very well be a little piece left
somewhere.

You might try Googling for Incredimail and see if there are other sites
(besides Incredimail's) that give instructions.

Hello all, I have Googled for Incredimail, and found some pieces of it that
were left. I have since removed them
and unfortunately, using gmail's smtp server, still doesn't work. Just for
some extra information, I am also
using Secure-IT and Bugoff. Is there anything in either of these programs
that might be doing this?
Thanks again for the help.........

I am experiencing an apparently similar problem with GMail (and
att.net) Both started today, but had occurred once before, also
together. I use Outlook 2002 ion a stand-alone environment.
