Outlook 2003 & Gmail Error 0x8004210B

I have been a user of outlook 2003 and gmail for a number of years. Without
warning I am all of a sudden unable to send gmail email, via my outlook
account.

I have made no changes to my system. I do not have a firewall and have a
router. I use Symantec AV. I have tried disabling the AV and XP firewall,
but no effect.

The error message states "sending reported error (0x8004210B) : 'The
operation timed out waiting for a response from the sending (SMTP) server."

I have followed the gmail pop forwarding instructions to a tee and as
mentioned above, have been using gmail and outlook 2003 successfully for many
years.

Please help.

Are you using 'smtp.gmail.com' with port 465 and SSL? I've seen a report of
a user having trouble with port 465 and SSL in Outlook 2003 on another email
service (using Yahoo! servers). Could you turn on logging, briefly, and post
the log?

Yes, my settings are exactly as you describe.

Up until a week ago, I have been using gmail and outlook for quite a long
time with no problems.

I have enabled logging. I am unsure of how to access the log. Any guidance
would be appreciated.

I can send via my shaw.ca account.

Hopefully I have stripped this info of any personal data. Please let me

The log shows that one of your gmail accounts (othergrmail) does seem to
connect and the server tells Outlook there are no messages to download.
Here are the relevant lines indicating this:

It does appear that the myname gmail account is the one failing. Have you
tried puttin ghtat account into its own send/receive group to see if that
helps? Make sure your send/receive interval is no less than about 10
minutes in any send/receive group.

Nothing after the '354 Go ahead'? That was the Gmail server response telling
Outlook to send the actual message data. In my successful logs, the next
line is a single dot ('.').

One possibility is mentioned in the last post in this DSL Reports thread:

The poster was having trouble with 'smtp.att.yahoo.com:465' w/SSL, and using
MS Outlook 2003. There are at least two reports of Windows Live Mail users,
and one of a Windows Mail user also having trouble with
'smtp.att.yahoo.com:465' w/SSL.

I don't know anything about "Digital ID" (yet), and not sure if it applies
to users of other than MS Outlook 2003.

I see the hang. Did you try putting this in its own send/receive group?
Did you try deleing the (yourprofile).SRS file in
%AppData%\Microsoft\Outlook? Did you try a new mail profile?

Yes, bu not sure what to do. I tried renaming my srs file as I was not sure

After renaming my srs file, I removed my gmail profile in outlook, closed
the program and tried adding it again. The test works fine. Still not

While viewing a mail folder, press Alt-Ctrl-S. This opens the Send/Receive
Groups dialogue. Select the existing send/receive group (probably "All
Accounts") and click Edit. Select the account having trouble and uncheck
"Include the selected account in this group" box at the top. Click OK. Now
click New, give the group a name, click OK, select the group having trouble,
then check the same box you unchecked above. Click OK, then Close. Now you
can test the account on its own with the SendReceive button by choosing only
that send/receive group.

sure
if I could just delete it.

Renaming and deleting are both the same to Outlook. If it can't find the
file, it will create a new one.
There is also a NK2 file and xml file associated
with this account. Should I try deleting all?

That's where your autocompletion data is stored so that when you start
typing in the To field, the addresses you've used before will pop up.
After renaming my srs file, I removed my gmail profile in outlook, closed
the program and tried adding it again. The test works fine. Still not
receiving. Here is my log.

You didn't remove a profile, you removed an account.

I see the same hang. I'd next try creating a new mail profile (Control
Panel's Mail applet) containing only the one problematic gmail account and
see if that made any difference.

No change, here is my log. I was trying to send a 1MB file using
(e-mail address removed). Wouldn't send. Meanwhile I used my shaw account to send
a 6MB file no problems...

You didn't remove a profile, you removed an account.

I see the same hang. I'd next try creating a new mail profile (Control
Panel's Mail applet) containing only the one problematic gmail account and
see if that made any difference.

No change, here is my log. I was trying to send a 1MB file using
(e-mail address removed). Wouldn't send. Meanwhile I used my shaw account to
send
a 6MB file no problems...

You still have multiple accounts performing send/receives simultaneously.
One of the reasons I asked you to put the failing account in its own
send/receive group was to isolate its actions from the other accounts so
that only the failing account actions are in the log. Please go back and
perform a send/receive only on the group contaiing the failing account.

I stripped out all but the SMTP. Everything looks good up to the "go ahead"
response from the server. The 354 message is supposed to tell Outlook to
send the data, but it doesn't. This indicates to me that some add in may be
interfering. In an earlier message you said you "disabled" your mail AV
scanner, but I'd like you to uninstall your AV program and reinstall it
without the mail scanning feature (or simply leave it uninstalled while you
diagnose the problem). I'd also like you to start Outlook in safe mode by
entering "outlook.exe /safe" in Start>Run (no quotes, of course, but include
the space). What happens then?

If you said you did this in a prior message, I'm sorry, but I can't see it,
so just let me know if you'd tried it already.
