Outlook2002 SMTP Problem with Gmail

I am sure I have configured my Outlook 2002 correctly. I can receive
gmail messages into the Inbox but if I try to send (or use the TEST
facility in Tools/Options/email accounts ) I get this error

Task '{account name}- Sending and Receiving' reported error
(0x8004210B) : 'The operation timed out waiting for a response from
the sending (SMTP) server. If you continue to receive this message,
contact your server administrator or Internet service provider (ISP).'

I get this using smtp.gmail.com or smtp.googlemail.com.

Can anyone help?

have you changed the smtp port to 465?

YES! That does work. I wanted an ISP independent address (gmail)
that I could switch all my contacts to, so that I could change ISPs
without worrying about losing contact with the outside world. So now
all I need to do is re-point the sendmail server when I move. Not
totally seemless but not too bad.

Try the SMTP server of your own ISP instead.

It depends a bit on the network you are connecting to. Some networks will
allow you to connect to external SMTP servers and others won't.
