I am having the same problem - I receive the following error:

The message could not be sent. The authentication setting might not be
correct for your outgoing e-mail [SMTP] server. For help solving this
problem, go to Help, search for "Troubleshoot Windows Mail", and read the
"I'm having problems sending e-mail" section. If you need help determining
the proper server settings, please contact your e-mail service provider.

This is typically a symptom caused by a non-compatible antivirus.
Which antivirus are you running?

You left off the most important part of the error message, which should
look something like this:

The rejected e-mail address was '(e-mail address removed)'. Subject 'test', Account:
'incoming.verizon.net', Server: 'outgoing.verizon.net', Protocol: SMTP,
Server Response: '550 5.7.1 Authentication Required', Port: 25,
Secure(SSL): No, Server Error: 550, Error Number: 0x800CCC78

Please post that part of your error message. Be sure to alter the
username portion of any email address.

There is no domain on the Internet named cmsu.edu .
Verify that you have the correct email address for that recipient.

Incidentally, Comcast wants you to change some of your settings, see:

FYI - With the help of a computer support person and a chat room discussion
with people at Comcast, my problem has been fixed. We needed to change the
port numbers on both Webmail and McAfee. I can't really explain it in detail
because the other guys were way more knowledgeable than me, however, I found
an email in my Junk folder from Comcast that directed me to the fix. Good
luck!

I am using McAfee. I do get an error message when I try to send before I
shut windows mail down, but there isn't any error number or error listed.

Most versions of the McAfee antivirus program tend to cause assorted
problems in Windows Mail, such as problems with sending messages,
although these problems seldom appear immediately. To handle this
you can try to see if that version of McAfee gives you the option of
disabling email scanning, and leaving it disabled. However, that seldom
helps; it's more likely that you'll have to uninstall the McAfee antivirus
program instead. You're then likely to need to reboot your computer
and run this cleanup program to take care of what the uninstall left
behind. You may even have to remove your email account under
Windows Mail, then restart Windows Mail and add the account again.

Also, start Windows Mail, then click Tools, then Options, then Send.
If there is no checkmark in the box before Send messages immediately,
click on this box, then Apply. Click on OK.

If this solves your problem, you may want a replacement antivirus
program that doesn't cause such problems in Windows Mail. Most
versions of the Norton antivirus program and a recent version of the
Trend antivirus program are bad choices; they also cause problems
in Windows Mail. I recommend either avast! or AVG, either one
with a custom install where you tell it to leave out the parts that scan
email.

http://www.avast.com/eng/avast_4_home.html

http://free.avg.com/ww.download?prd=afe

http://thundercloud.net/infoave/tutorials/email-scanning/index.htm

If this doesn't solve your problem, see if it at least changes your
error message enough you can right click on it and copy all of it
to your next message.
