Unable to send files directly from folders

Hi,
I can send and recieve emails using Microsoft Windows Mail - and can attach
files without any problems.

However, when I am in a folder directory, and I click on a file, then click
'email' or right click on the file and select 'send to' 'mail recipient'
nothing happens. The box disappears and nothing happens - no email box pops
up as I would expect.
If I am trying to send pictures, the 'attach files' box pops up, when I can
select small, or medium etc, then I select attach, and a box flashes up
'preparing to send' then nothing after this.

Can anyone advise how I can send files directly from the folders?

Thanks!

Open the Default Programs applet, which you can access either from
the Start menu or via the Control Panel, then click the first item:
"Set your default programs."
After a few seconds, a list of programs comes up. Click on "Windows
Mail". If it doesn't respond with "This program has all its defaults"
then fix it by clicking on the option indicated by the first green arrow.
