how do i remove the network connection icon, which is indicating that the
cable is unplugged, from the status notification area on the taskbar? i've
already tried playing around with both boxes under the General Tab in Local
Area Connection Properties.

You can use ALWAYS HIDE Options.

Right-Click on Task Bar, Properties,

Click Customize button
Look for the icon and click/select always hide.

Besides the sound icon, the network connection icon is the only icon
appearing in the status notification area of the taskbar. My goal is to
have just the sound icon in that area. Replacing the network connection
icon with the HIDE INACTIVE ICONS icon leaves me in the same place. Still,
I sincerely appreciate your help.

You can do this by two ways.
Right click by the Network Connections on your desktop and select
Properties. Select the network connection an right click by it and
select Properties again and uncheck the Show Icon in Notification
area... checkbox.
Or you can use the some third-party tray manager for hiding tray icons
because the embedded into XP tray manager is unstable :(
For example, I use PS Tray Factory
