How to remove "Local Area Connection" icon from my notifications area

R

Richard Wein

I'd like to remove an annoying but persistent icon from the notifications
area of my taskbar. OK, it's not doing any real harm, but it's taking up
valuable space on my taskbar.

It's a network connection-type icon with a red cross through it. The pop-up
balloon for it reads "Local Area Connection. A network cable is unplugged."
I'm not using any local area network

I have "Hide Inactive Icons" checked in taskbar properties, but this icon
always seems to be active--it's visible all the time. I've selected
"Customize" and then changed "Hide when inactive" for this icon to "Always
hide", but the next time I start up the system, I always find it's changed
back to "Hide when inactive".

Thanks for any help.

Richard Wein.

Go to Start Menu\Programs\Accessories\Communications and
go to Network Connections, right click on the "Local Area
Connection" and go to Properties.

There should be a box to untick called "Show icon when
connected" or along them lines.

Try that

I had the same situation with a new Gateway computer and I was using a
dial-up ISP. It was the network card that was "unplugged," and the only way
I found to remove that notification was to disable that connection. Problem
solved.

Right click it, select Status, click Properties, uncheck "Show icon in
notification area when connected".
