Unable to read from external USB 2.0 card reader

William Deertz

Running WinXP PRo and recently purchased a 8-in-1 USB 2.0 external card
reader. WinXP recognizes the device when I plug it into a USB 2 port but
when I put a memory card into any of the slots it starts with an autoplay
search. I have tried to cancel but it eventually times out. If I boot up
the computer with a memory card in one of the slots it doesn't go into
autoplay but when I try to access the drive it goes into a perpetual search.
The access light blinks like its trying to read the data but it eventually
times out. If I put a blank card into the reader it will read the drive but
with no data.

Any ideas why I can't read any card using an external reader? I've tried
different formats all with no luck.

Are you sure that the USB port on your computer is a USB
2.0, if you are plugging into a USB 1.0 port it won't
work. Some devices are backwards compatible with 1.0 but
some are not. That would be the first thing I would
check. I'd also go to the devices website and make sure I
have the lastest drivers for the device. Good luck.

Hello
have exactly the same problem as you, have XP Home-edition, SP1 running with a MSI motherboard USB 2.0 with NVidia Nforce 2. I tried 3 types of card readers and 3 types of compact flash cards (Sandisk, Canon, Noname). It didn't work. I cannot read datas. Sometimes if I am lucky one file is readable but it takes minutes. I also tried several USB-ports (I have 6), it didn't work. I set the USB to 1.1 in the BIOS, it didn't work. Funny, all other USB-devices (Printer USB1.1, Mouse, Wheel USB 1.1, Scanner USB2.0, Memorystick USB2.0, Joystick USB1.1) do work without the slightest problem (even teh Memorystick). Maybe a PCI-USB-card coult solve the problem? Some say, that there may be a timing problem and a small program to reduce data-transfer speed might help. However, I gve up
