Hi. I have a Gateway 2.8Gig P4 computer, about five years old, but has
XP SP3. I want to read SD memory cards, but having trouble installing a
Dynex Memory Card Reader. When I plug the USB cable, instead of the
normal USB chirp, then the device, I get a three short churps, then
nothing. I can go to control panel->add hardware->update hardware.
It'll ask me for the installation CD, start to install, then give an
installation error, 'data invalid'. Now what do I do?

Return the defective device for refund (provided it was
sold as running under WinXP.)

No, but I tried to plug in a trailcam. A USB device with a SD memory
card, same problem.

After googling, I suspect it's a permission problem, see
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/841567 . Instead of the PCI folder, I
went to the USB folder to give the correct permissions to all the child
folders. Didn't work. Then I deleted the USB reader folder itself.
Now when I plug in the USB SD memory reader, instead of three quick
churps I get the new hardware prompt. Still won't install, however. Is
there another registery folder I need to set permissions? Or do I need
to allow [Everyone] in the USB folder permission? ..Dennis

I just tried to card reader on a new Vista machine. Worked, no problem.
Nothing wrong with the reader or the SD cards. Tried the trailcam, that
worked too.

It's a simple plug-n-play device. So why doesn't it work on my XP
machine? Too old? Too many patches?

Sounds like a USB port problems. Have you ever installed the
motherboard chipset drivers?

Nope, never played with any chipset. Emailed Gateway. Out of warranty,
of course. At this point, I have no desire to spend $60 for 30 minutes.

I followed one tech papers advice. In the device manager I uninstalled
all the USB drivers. Upon reboot, new hardware installed. Now my USB
scanner doesn't work. Same "data is invalid" problem.

I installed this scanner right after I bought the computer, back in
2004. I don't remember if I had to do something special to get it to
work. I did notice something after the boot, under the device manager
USB drivers. Don't remember the exact phrase, but there was a "PCI to
USB compatible" driver.

The USB scanner did work, worked for years. There has to be a way to
get it to work again. I suspect we might have a USB 2.0 problem. Maybe
we need to make this computer just a USB 1.1 machine....Dennis

Hi. Rebooted the machine and change the BIOS settings, disabling USB
2.0. Same problem.

I fear the problem was going from SP2 to SP3. I must not have the right
drivers available for the scanner and the card reader. The trouble is,
I do have the latest (and only) drivers from both manufacturers. So now
what?

I tried downloading driver detective, so a called free program. It
scanned, told me I need to update a couple usb drivers, but won't do
anything until I register. Again, now what? Buy a program in the hopes
it might work?

NEVER use the "driver" updaters. These can be full of "spyware" and
mess up your PCs.

What type of chipset does your motherboard use?

About $29.95 too late. It was the weekend and I was struggling to solve
this problem, but that's no excuse. Driver detective reported outdated
USB drivers and installed newer drivers. That didn't solve the problem,
however, and DD still reported outdated drivers. Now I'm receiving
double the normal amount of spam email. Serves me right.

Monday morning I installed a PCI card with USB ports. The USB card
reader and my old USB scanner still didn't work. Then I removed all the
USB device manager drivers and upon reboot disabled the main board USB
ports. Still didn't work.

As a final act of desperation, I restored a hard drive backup from six
months ago. Of course I first backed up all my recent data, minus drive

You can use CPUZ to get the chipset information relatively quickly.

http://www.cpuid.com/cpuz.php

*******

Unlike some other hardware, USB and Firewire have standardized
register interfaces. That makes it possible for a driver to be
bundled with the OS, and reduces or eliminates the need for the
hardware companies to be distributing their own stuff. If there
is a hardware bug, sometimes there will be a specific fix needed,
but if you're using a recent Service Pack, chances are you've got
every fix there is to be offered.

Some USB problems can be fixed by deleting the USB entries in Device
Manager, and allowing Windows to rediscover that hardware. That doesn't
solve every problem, but it has helped some people.

A lot of VIA motherboard chipsets may also require a USB filter
driver. You can usually find this driver and the most recent VIA
chipset drivers @ viaarena.com

According to CPU-Z, the mainboard:

Manaufacturer: Intel Corporation
Model: D865GLC AAC27501-407
Chipset: Intel i865P/PE/G/i848P Rev. A2
Southbridge: Intel 82801EB(ICH5)

I did a complete hard drive restore and got my USB scanner working once
again. I looked at the device manager USB drivers. The list looks the
same, except for "Standard Enhanced PCI to USB Host Controller". If I
were to delete these USB drivers, the rebuild won't add this driver
back. Is this driver a leftover from another piece of hardware or it
the reason my USB scanner quit working? Do we need something like it to
get the USB card reader to work?

do NOT need this or any driver in any Microsoft Operating System."

HTH,

Many thanks for the advice.

So I want to the Intel® Desktop Board D865GLC download for Windows XP
professional, correct? If the new inf files didn't work or broke
something else, would I able to restore the old ones?

It works!!!!!! Thank you, thank you, thank you.......

I was scared. The install went ahead and updated several items. I was
worried I'd break something, a network connection, the scanner, etc.
But I rebooted. Still got the network, scanner works, the camera
connects, and now the card reader works (without asking for the CD
install).

Again, many thanks. Much appreciated...Dennis
