Unable to print from IE6

G

Guest

I am using Windows XP SP2 and IE6.

Everytime I try to print from IE6, I can not print and get the following
Internet Explorer Script Error message:

An error has occured in the script of this page
Line: 297
Char: 26
Error: Expected '('
Code: 0
URL: res://C:\WINDOWS\system32\shdoclc.dll/preview.dlg
Do you want to continue running the script on this page?

I have tried the answer 'yes' or 'no' with the same effect --> I can not
print.
However, my wife who is using the same computer with different log-in name
can print from the IE6.
I can also print from Opera or other programs (MS Word, MS Excel, etc).

And I have read and tried most of the suggestions posted in this forum
regarding script error and unable to print from IE6 without any scuccess. It
is quite frustrating.

Anybody to help? Thank you.

Hi Paul :)

Try the following and see if it helps:

res://C:\WINDOWS\system32\shdoclc.dll/preview.dlg

You may need to update your printer driver. Go to the website for your
printer and download and install the most recent driver for that printer for
your OS.

also..

Unable to print
http://inetexplorer.mvps.org/archive/answers_8.htm#print
http://inetexplorer.mvps.org/archive/answers3.htm

and...

This error can be caused by adware. Do the following:

Go to Tools>Internet Options>Advanced tab
Uncheck the option for "Enable third-party browser extensions"
Click Apply
Click OK
Close the browser.
Restart the browser and attempt to print

If this resolves your problem, then you have some form of scumware on your
system, so you need to do the following to clean it from your system:

Dear Vincenzo,

Thank you, but there is still no success.
The interesting (or confusing thing) is if I log-in as other persons (my
wife or kid) in the same computer, I can print the website from IE, but not
if I log-in as myself.

Is the machine fully patched at Windows Update?

Did you only recently install SP2 and is that when the problem started?

Running any Norton or McAfee applications? Pop-up blockers?

Dear Robear,

Yes, the Windows XP SP2 and Office are updated.
I installed SP2 few months back and this printing problems just started last
week.

I am running Norton SystemWorks with Antivirus. I have tried to disable it
when I boot my computer, but it does not solve the problem.
Yes, I am using the pop-up blockers in the IE6.

I do not have this printing problem if I use Opera.

Thank you for spending time to solve this problem.

1. See if disabling Norton Script Blocking helps at all:
http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/nav.nsf/docid/2001020912195106

2. IE Tools > Internet Options > Advanced > Enable third-party browser
helper objects (uncheck & reboot). If doing so resolves the problem, you
need to find and remove the hijackware which caused it.

Malware Removal and Prevention - CastleCopsWiki:
http://wiki.castlecops.com/Malware_Removal_and_Prevention:_Introduction
... this printing problems just started last week.

3. If by chance you installed 896688 (MS05-052, Cumulative Security Update
for IE) last week, you might try to "ole32.dll" fix mentioned in
http://support.microsoft.com/Default.aspx?kbid=909889.

You can download a "ready-to-go" REG file of the fix here:

http://patch-info.de/IE/Downloads/OLEfix.zip - Extract the contents of
OLEFix.zip to your desktop > Double-click on the REG file to merge it with
your Registry.

http://www.dougknox.com/xp/utils/kb896688_fix.zip - Extract the contents of
kb898888_fix.zip to your desktop > Double-click the EXE file to run it.
(KB896688_fix.exe is a small VB app that checks the 4 values and offers a
repair option if any of them are incorrect)

following message:

An error has occured in the script of this page
Line: 1
Char: 1
Error: Object expexted
Code: 0
URL: res://C:\WINDOWS\system32\shdoclc.dll/preview.dlg

Try opening that URL from your Address bar and then do a View Source

Here is what I get for the first few lines when I do that:

<example>
<HTML XMLNS:IE>
<HEAD>
<?import namespace="ie" implementation="#default">
<META HTTP-EQUIV="MSThemeCompatible" CONTENT="Yes">

</example>

This suggests that your XML support might be a factor.

You can get a report about that from the XMLVersionText tool.
It's quite old but it still works.

Hi Paul,

Can't explain it, sorry. One of those unexplainable happenings that
sometimes occur in some of Uncle Bill's software. I'm happy to find that
the fix worked for you.

Cheers,

No, I don't, nor can I remember seeing this as the fix in any other
discussions. I /will/ remember it.

Dear Robear,

Thank you for spending your time to help me.
The method mentioned by Larry solved my problem.
It is to change the view encoding from Auto Select to others.
Do you know why?

I hae seen this fix (even recommended it) but I have no idea why it
sometimes works. To my mind it shouldn't work, but it definitely does
sometimes.
