unable to open programs

Windows 2000 running on an Acer laptop. All of a sudden
when clicking on program icons on desktop, programs will
not open, but, program properties window open. Can anyone
shed some light on this. Thanks
 
Any chance someone has swapped your mouse buttons ?
Can you run programs from the run line ?

Do you left click on the icons or right click ?
