Unable to open large XLS file on Windows XP computer with Office 2

I am posting here because I believe this may be an XP issue. I have tried on
several Windows XP Pro computers to open a 68 meg XLS Excel file with Excel
2002 and Excel 2003. I get an error every time. I can open this same file
with Excel 2002 on a Windows 98 SE and a Windows ME computer. Everytime I go
to open the file it gets about half open then I get the error

Excel cannot complete this task with available resources. Choose less data
or close other applications.
This happens twice then Excel extracts my text data. Of course I lose all
formatting. The computers that I have used all are Windows XP Pro SP2. All
are AMD processors. They have 256, 512, and 1024 megs of ram installed. All
have plenty of hard drive space. Two of them are fresh installs of XP Pro
and Office 2003 Basic Edition. One is 2003 Professional Edition.

I want to move my office to XP Pro from Windows 98 but I have to be able to
open these files. I am thinking it is some sort of a resource management
issue. I have tried Excel and the computers in Safe Mode. Have been talking
to Microsoft support but so far no help. Any ideas?

Please take this question to one of the Excel newsgroups. I understand your
reasoning for posting this question here but it's far more likely, if there
are others who have experienced the problem, they will be posting to an
Excel group and/be reading those groups. Also, other's with far more
experience with Excel frequent those groups.
