Unable to open a word 2002 document from desktop

I loaded my Office 2002 onto my new Gateway computer. Now if I have a Word
document opened and try to open another word document from My Documents (or
My Computer), it won't open it. I have to do a New document and then Open
from the File Menu.

Any ideas?
