I have a newer laptop (6 month old Dell Inspiron 6000) running Windows XP Pro
sp2. It is part of a Domain network with our main server running Windows
Small Business Server 2003. The laptop was fine about a week ago, and
suddenly it won't logon to the server any longer. When I type the login
information, the computer logs on like nothing is wrong, however none of the
network shares or printers are connected. I have tried the system at
different ports in the office to rule out the network connection in the
user's office. Our internet and email runs through the network connection
separate from the server, the laptop can access this information just fine.
I can browse the internet as well as send and receive email. For some reason
the system seems to be blocked from the server. The laptop is the only
computer in the office having problems, everyone else is able to logon to the
server normally. The fact that I can get online leads me to believe that the
network card in the laptop is fine also. DHCP is giving the laptop an IP
address and I can ping other computers from the laptop, I just can't get
access to the files on the server. The user said he had installed Google
Earth, then it quit working. I used system restore to revert the hard drive
back to before Google Earth was installed, but no luck.
Is there anything within XP Pro that could be toggled on to prevent the user
from logging on to the file server? Does anyone have any ideas as to why
this suddenly started happening? I haven't had a chance to really
troubleshoot the problem as the user is always needing access to email etc.,
plan on doing that on Monday morning as the user will be out of the office
most of the day. Any suggestions, ideas, etc. would be greatly appreciated
so I can get the problem fixed. Thanks in advance.
