A small coloured square appears in the upper left hand corner. However, if I
save the file to the desktop and click on it, it will load. I have the
latest Acrobat Reader update and am running XP. Your assistance is greatly
appreciated.

sounds like a plugin issue, check pluggins within IE

Open Adobe Acrobat Reader.
In the Edit, Preferences dialog, disable browser integration, and press OK.
Redo the same, and enable browser integration again.

This resets the MIME / Plugin settings in the registry for pdf documents.

Re 'check pluggins within IE' - Sorry, but could you please elaborate, with
thanks.

In Adobe Acrobat Reader/Edit/Preferences, I see the following:
Accessibility, Digital signatures, Forms, Full screen, General, Identity,
Internet, Java Script, Multimedia, Page display, Reading, Search, Smoothing,
Start up, Trust Manager, Units and Updates.

I do not see 'Browser integration' in the list or inside any of those
categories. Regret inconvenience.

Look for something like "display pdf in browser" in Preferences, probably
Internet.
