Have read nearly every post on this subject both here, at Microsoft and at
Adobe and cannot seem to fix this problem. Running Adobe Acrobat 5.0.5, IE 6.
0, Windows XP Pro 5.1 SP2. Initially, was also running Adobe Reader 7.0,
latest version with updates.

The problem is that with both Reader and Acrobat installed, pdf's on web
pages would not open at all, instead creating a totally blank window in IE
that would sort of hang up. The only option for opening a pdf was to Save
Target As or to open Acrobat and paste the URL.

Additionally, pdf files saved to my machine would open with Reader instead of
Acrobat unless Acrobat was already open. Kind of a pain to have to remember
to first launch Acrobat before opening a saved file for editing.

Clearly there is a conflict when both Reader 7.0 and Acrobat are installed.
Although, I have both Acrobat 5.0 and an older version of the Reader
installed at work and do not have either problem there.

I uninstalled Reader since Acrobat is the more important program for me.
However clicking a pdf file on a web page now generates a prompt to Open or
Save. If Open is selected, Acrobat is launched instead of displaying the
file in the browser window. The option to "display pdf in browser" IS
SELECTED within Acrobat under Edit- Preferences- General- Options. There
does not seem to be a similar selection in IE 6.0 under Internet Options.

While I'm happy that I can at least open the files without going through a
routine of cut and paste, it is really frustrating that the files will not
just display in the browser. I don't like using the "Open" option and
clogging up the temporary file folder with junk, although I guess that's
mostly what ends up in there anyhow.

Has anyone ever successfully resolved this issue? From reading the majority
of posts here, it seems as if compromise was the only option. Just want it
to work how it is supposed to work. PS: I can't at this time afford to
upgrade to a newer version of Acrobat which may or may not solve the problem.

So, what do I use then to create documents in a universal format?
