Unable to load any programs

I am running XP on a fairly new Compaq computer. I am
unable to load any new software at all. When I insert the
program disk it starts normally. As I begin to go through
the initial screens it shuts down completely and I am
back at my desk top. I am the administrator and an
external virus check is clear. Any suggestions, Thanks
