unable to install/uninstall network components in Windows 2000

Cannot install or uninstall any network components such as TCP/IP protocol
when in the properties page of Network and dial-up-connections page.
Also the properties button for any component already installed is
greyed-out and not functioning.

Any idea's as to the problem?

I suspect a Registry CLISD or other entry is corrupted or missing.
It is not anything to do with security permisions as I have full control

Check Event Viewer for errors.

No event relating to this problem.

Any other solutions please?

I don't want to have to reinstall W2k just to enable configuration of
protocols etc..

Once I had a similar problem. It turned out that the value of 'Config' in
'HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Network' was corrupted.
Restoring that value from registry backup solved the problem.

I would like to try your solution as i am sure it is a corrupted reg.entry
Unfortunately i have no reg backup file which would provide the correct
value for 'config'.

do you have any other possibilities?
